Brief History

The Siberian developed from household and farm cats in Russia. There are Russian paintings and literature dating back hundreds of years depicting this breed. However, this breed was more or less unknown outside of Russia until the 1980s when it was first registered in Saint Petersburg. They were not introduced to the United States until the 1990s. Today Siberian Cats, although relatively rare, are very popular and recognized around the world and accepted in all registries.

Siberians are a very athletic breed. They are quite playful and active. They are also known to be able to leap surprising distances both horizontally and vertically. This agility is in contrast to their relatively heavy physical makeup.

Known for their good temperament, Siberian cats are often likened to dogs as regards personality. They greet their humans at door, follow them around the house and try and take part in their activities. Oh, and many love to play fetch.  See the video on the next page to watch a Siberian playing fetch with her owner.
