2 Library Cats Who Left their Paw Prints on the World

* CONTEST NOW CLOSED *

We love to read cat books and recently came across this gem called “The True Tails of Baker and Taylor“.  We wanted to share their story and contacted the author and her publicist who graciously donated 5 signed copies to us which we raffled off to 5 lucky Purrington Post readers! Contest entry details below.

Lisa Rogak is co-author with the librarian (Jan Louch) who cared for the cats. The cats lived in a small library in an even tinier town while serving as mascots of the Baker & Taylor book distribution company where they appeared on millions of posters, shopping bags, coffee mugs, and in hundreds of ads.

The Setting

When Jan Louch landed her dream job as a librarian at a library in a tiny town well south of Reno, Nevada, she had no way of knowing that the job — particularly the two Scottish Fold cats she “hired” to head up the Rodent Control Department in the early 1980s — would change her life while also raising the spirits of millions of people around the world.

She named the cats Baker and Taylor (after the library wholesaler who she dealt with on a daily basis), and after a few executives at Baker & Taylor offered to use them as company mascots and distributed posters featuring the cats, their fame quickly spread worldwide. Before long, fans were showing up at the library to meet the cats, people from all over the world wrote to request their “pawtograph” — Jan obliged them with a pawprint-shaped rubber stamp and a green inkpad — and a class of second graders in Ohio launched a fan club, all before the Internet had taken hold.

Our own initial attempts to read the book were fraught with ginger curiosity…one of our kitties (Mouse) decided he needed to see what all the fuss was about with Baker & Taylor.

Piqued your interest yet?  Spoiler alert…the librarian didn’t do it!  >^..^<  Be sure to enter the contest.
