The Very Best Books All Cat Lovers Need to Read

Following is a guest post kindly submitted by Katherine Rundell (details in bio below).

We love our cats. Of course, we do. They’re beautiful, cute, friendly, wholesome, and cuddly when they want feeding. I love my cat more than anything, and whenever I’m in a bad mood, she always knows how to cheer me up.

But, as you know, cats are also a little independent, so I can’t spend all my time with her, which means I fulfill my cat craving instead with some of my favorite cat books. If you’re a cat lover, these are not to be missed, so let’s jump straight into it!

I Am A Cat

This is a translated story written by Soseki Natsume, one of Japan’s most classic literature collections. It’s a beautiful and satirical look at Japanese society in the 20th Century from the perspective of a noble house cat who watches humans and shares his perspective. Very funny and entertaining from start to finish.

Dewey, the Library Cat

Whenever I need a heartfelt cat story, Dewey never fails to bring a smile to my face. The story revolves around Dewey, a kitten abandoned in a library drop box. While life didn’t give him the best start, he was beautifully raised in the library and loved by all. What’s more, this is based on a true story!

How to Tell If Your Cat is Plotting to Kill You

You ever been in that position? The one where you just suddenly notice your cat staring at you in a funny way and you’re trying to work out what’s going through its head, and then you start scaring yourself when you think it might be trying to kill you … or at least planning to?

“Matthew Inman takes a dive into how you can tell whether your cat is trying to kill you (satire, of course). The writing is awesome, and the cartoons and annotations in this book are even better. If you’re a cat lover of any degree, you need this book on your bookshelf. It’s for your own protection,” explains Tina Jacketts, a cat expert at Essay Services and OXEssays.

The Fur Person

Many people call this book the essential autobiography of a cat. The tale follows the story of a wandering-town cat that slowly makes its way into May Sarton’s life. She describes all those amazing human-like cat features, and any owner of a new cat that’s settling in will be able to relate in so many ways.

Millions of Cats

If you’re looking for a cat book that your children are going to love as well, look no further than Millions of Cats. Written by Wanda Gag, the book follows an elderly couple that wants to get a cat, but instead of finding one, they find hundreds, then thousands, then millions and billions.

Each cat wants to be owned and fights for the top spot of being adopted. I won’t give away what happens, but it’s well worth a read. This is fantastic bedtime reading.

The Cat Inside

“Written by the famous William S. Burroughs, this is a little novella that follows Burrough’s love for cats by detailing his experience with a cat he lived with and has known for most of his life. It’s a beautiful retelling of what it’s like to love a cat, and there are plenty of little mannerisms described that you’d see in your own feline, only helping you to love them more,” shares Duncan Harley, a writer at Revieweal and UKWritings.

One of my absolute favorites, and a truly original story you won’t see anywhere else on this list. It’s a sci-fi story where cats and dogs, among other animals, are fighting against humanity. They have speech and human-level thought. Morte falls in love with the dog next door, and when the war comes to their doorsteps, he has to fight rather than find love.

An absolute page-turner. >^..^<

Simon’s Cat

Simon’s cat, created by Simon Tofield, has become a huge meme on the internet, and as soon as you see the animations and cartoons, you’ll remember having already seen these. However, have you read the story for yourself?

Simon’s cat is innocent, constantly hungry, adorable, affectionate, and has no concept of what is right and what is wrong. Basically everything both mine and your cat is. Tofield nails these details perfectly.

I Could Pee on This

Says it all right? You already know what cats are like when it comes to ownership of human belongings. When you have a cat, you don’t own anything. Everything is your cat’s. This book of poems, which has been written by cats, captures this perfectly and includes some other amazing titles, including ‘This is My Chat,’ ‘Kneel Before Me,’ and ‘Some of my Best Friend’s are Dogs.’ It’s great!

Old Possums’ Book of Practical Cats

Written by the amazing writer that is T.S Eliot, this is the book that actually inspired the Cats musical to come out. It’s full of nonsense and craziness, and it’s definitely a light-hearted read that’s only going to leave you begging for more!
